Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Along side Tekken Tag 2 I’ve also been playing some Tekken Revolution, Soul Calibur Lost Swords and DOA 5 Ultimate.
3 different approaches to the free to play model for fighting games each of them I think has an interesting idea.
I think some of the ideas born out of these free to play games could help Tekken Tag 2.
One of the things I think that could help maintain Tekken Tag 2’s life span and help keep an online community is the addition of a couple elements from the free to play model.
The first is the use of log in bonuses, why not reward the player for firing up the game with a little randomised goodness.
Logging on (maybe by accessing the online menu) could net the player a potential reward like Fight money or a new item, aura or decal.
This could be an alternative way to introduce the basic items I mentioned in part 2.
The creation of a secondary in game currency like the Gift Points system could be used to unlock special content.
Online Pair Play could earn something like Friend Points or a point bonus.
The second part is the use of Festivals to provide extra incentive for players to log on and play with other players online, bonus rewards for certain periods of time.
I’m going to squeeze in Part 4 here.
One of the things Tekken has traditionally lacked and has likely hurt the game when trying to win over newer players.
Fight Lab covers some basic concepts but is a bit lacking on more advanced mechanics and features of the game.
A Command Training feature is a good start, to allow new players to run through and practice a character’s move list.
Something like Virtua Fighter 4’s tutorial mode would be a very useful feature to add, teaching the players everything from beginner concepts to the advanced ones with feedback to help a player understand them better.
Like if the player is having trouble executing a particular move the game can give them advice on input and timing.
Alternatively the inclusion of some training videos in the theatre mode would be a good alternative to a full tutorial mode.
These are the general ideas I had, without getting too far into specific characters which I might cover another time.

Part 2: DLC and Customisation
Tekken Tag 2 had a good deal of free DLC shortly after release including characters, stages and the bikini sets. Later on paid DLC was added in the form of the soundtracks and movies from the previous Tekken titles. The soundtracks could be used for Tekken Tunes this was a good idea to some extent. But not really DLC that can bring in a lot of money since all the movies and soundtracks are easily accessible online through sites like Youtube which would have hurt potential sales. I think one of the let downs with Tekken Tag 2 is that this was the extent of the DLC maybe it was due to insufficient sales of that DLC that we didn’t get more, maybe it was the change of focus over to Tekken Card Tournament and then Tekken Revolution which has left the Tekken Tag 2 DLC rather lacking. Many players were hoping to have the option of obtaining additional costumes such as costumes from previous Tekkens especially as customisable items. It is a great shame that it didn’t happen because like many people I’m sure I was really looking forward to that prospect and would have gladly paid to have the costumes. The chances of future DLC for Tekken Tag 2 looks unlikely since focus has once again shifted to Tekken 7 and Tekken X Streetfighter.
I believe a good supply of reasonably priced DLC costumes could have helped bring in enough money to help cover the costs of maintaining the now dead World Tekken Federation.
I still think there’s potential in selling DLC custom items and other non gameplay related content. Using a model similar to the one Soul Calibur V had at one point or the one Dead or Alive uses now with a variety of costumes/items available for purchase, premium kind of stuff.
The obvious one for Tekken Tag 2 is the one I mentioned above the addition of costumes from Tekkens past. Everything from Nina’s Tekken 1 2p outfit to Anna’s famous Zebra/Tiger costume right up to the 2p costumes from Tekken 6. The ability to customise these as individual items would greatly increase their value. They could be sold in individual packs like Nina Tekken 1 Costume 1 Pack which would include all the pieces to make that outfit. Additionally they could be sold in packs organised either by character or game. Other options could be standard costume item packs a sort of set of additional generic items for various characters or some of the custom items from the previous Tekkens like Paul’s Skyscraper. Cross over DLC are another option in the same way SCV had Tekken costumes Tekken Tag 2 could have SC items just think Kunimitsu with a Taki costume, Law with Maxis, Marduk with Astaroth, Kazuya with Mitsurugi, Anna with Ivy (not sure who would get Voldo’s).
The addition of additional items like new character panels, Auras,decals, avatars and themes are additional things that could be sold as DLC.
- I’m going to throw in some ideas for expanding the customisation system outside of DLC costumes.
- More basic items adding items like the Kung fu shirt and pants to Wang, Samurai bottom to Kuni, Trooper hat for Dragunov (those fur ones with side parts), more masks for Kuni and Yoshi.
- Removal of premade decals from various costumes from what I can see most of those decals already exist within the Decal system but to remove them requires using the decals which uses up a valuable slot.
- Splitting of top and bottom items into respective parts (arms/torso and bottoms and feet) this may have been made that way because of performance or engine limitations if that is true ignore this one.
- An alternative to the above option is the possibility of moving certain pieces over to the Upper or Lower Body slots, for things like Jackets, Bracelets, knee pads and so on.
- Adding the transformation effect items to the store, like the bunny mask that you get when zapped by the wand, the assets are there why not reuse them?
Decals: The decal system is great system that helped make up for some of the limitations of the TT2 customisation compared to that of Tekken 6, it opened up a lot of options for customisation and some interesting costumes and interesting effects. With a few small changes I think the decal system could be taken to a whole nother level.
- Adding a Z slider for Decal movement, this would greatly improve the decal system making it easier to place decals and limiting texture tearing.
- Add another slot for both decal editor and the equip, 1 more slot would make a big difference.
- Use the same colour option as the items, using current and saved colours in particular would make things easier.
- Free draw the ability to actually just paint the decal, alternatively the ability to put more than one decal on the same layer
- Alphabet and Numerical decals again would make things much easier.
- Patterns the addition of decals like tiger print or various fabric prints from various cultures
- Tiling this is a big one, the ability to have the decals tiling when placing them on the character and setting the size at which they tile, this would open up the decal system into a potential pattern system.
- Add decals to Banners, Hats and Masks, for the mask the addition of a sort of blank mask for Kuni, Yoshi would be great.
Obviously I’ve been thinking about Customisation a lot. Part 3 will cover a way to use the customisation to help maintain an online presence.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2
So I wanted to start this new blog with the latest (sort of) version of my favourite fighting game series Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
Ever since the first Tekken Tag I along with so many other players dreamt of a sequel to the game I invested a lot of time and money into, thinking of the dream match ups and the ways the older characters would be updated to the newer setting.
A rare move for me but I preordered the game and waited for the local EB Games to open on the day I was there a good half hour early eagerly waiting for the game, the only one waiting in this town but somewhat predictable for me since for a long time Tekken was the first thing people would think of when mentioning me “the guy who plays Teeken” of course I would be there.
For me Tekken Tag 2 definitely lived up to the idea in my head of the game and in some ways exceeded it.
I was one of the many people who had tweeted to Harada begging to bring back the characters I had fallen in love with in the last game.
To their credit the Tekken team obliged us, whiny and demanding fans going so far as to even release characters I didn’t fully expect like Violet and Miharu.
I requested the return of one of my long time favourites Kunimitsu and I may have actually squeed when she was announced and I saw the first footage along side Angel and Michelle.
I can’t remember if I took the time to thank Harada and the team for this but I am very appreciative and my request wasn’t an idle one, although she turned out a bit differently than I thought she would I think her new style is very cool and very unique and she’s by a good majority my most played character.
But I think that’s enough about my Tekken story, for now at least.
Now onto the point of these blogs-
I love Tekken Tag 2 but I have notes.
Instead of just musing on a forum somewhere or just tweeting and trying to compress my thoughts down to 140ish characters I’m going to take the time to properly write out my thoughts and try and sort them into categories.
The point of all this is to give some reflective feedback on my experience of Tekken Tag 2 and some suggestions for it’s future.

Since it came out I’ve always viewed Tekken Tag as a different sort of Tekken one that’s different enough to keep it fun along side the main series.
I was playing Tekken Tag along side Tekken 4,5 and even through Tekken 6.
The game had a large balanced roster and good core mechanics that made the game one that had a lot of longevity so much so that I’ve worn through multiple copies of the game (I’m not good with disc upkeep) including the HD version I’ve got 6 copies of the game.
Tekken Tag 2 has the same potential but unlike the original Tag this one has online play and customisation 2 big factors I think in the longevity of the title.
The third factor I think is it’s silliness Tekken Tag 2 was like if you took everything crazy and over the top that you love about Tekken and threw it all together and to it’s credit it works.
But it’s not all good news unfortunately.
The series as a whole seems to be suffering from a bit of an identity crisis trying to appeal to 2 different markets at the same time.
The important casual market that helps drive sales and keeps the series alive and the hardcore market that forms the backbone.
Go too far to please one market and you risk alienating the other.
Tekken Revolution is an attempt to appeal to the more main stream crowd as a sort of Tekken lite.
Tekken has a very steep learning curve, I’d argue one of the steepest of almost any game and in some ways I feel it’s become more steeper than even Virtua Fighter.
So it seems like that there’ll be some big game play changes for the upcoming Tekken 7, maybe the removal of bounds or rage, a simplification of the game and a reduction of character base all this remains to be seen.
This is where I think Tekken Tag 2 has something unique to offer.
A sort of Tekken for the hardcore set, the over the top juggles, complex gameplay and large roster may drive away potential players but it might be a way of appealing to 2 different crowds to some extent.
While I’m not advocating that Tekken 7 be made solely for the casual market it can be more focused on that side than Tekken Tag 2, leaving Tekken Tag 2 to be more of a niche title.
With the suggestions I’ll be laying out in the next couple parts I hope to make a case for continuing support for Tekken Tag 2 as well as ways to keep it going.
